About this plant

Pawpaw Asimina

Pawpaws (Asimina) are deciduous shrubs and small trees from the forests and sandy riverbanks of eastern North America. They are the only temperate members of the largely tropical custard-apple family, and look exotic with their large drooping leaves, purple bell-shaped flowers and creamy, edible fruits, yet they are fully at home in cold winters.

Asimina triloba

Asimina triloba is the tree-forming species of the genus: a slow-growing, pyramidal small tree that reaches 5 to 10 m in the wild but usually stays nearer 5 to 6 m in gardens. In spring, before the leaves, it bears nodding, wine-red bells. From around three to six years old it produces oval fruits up to about 15 cm, with a taste between mango and banana.

Location and soil

Plant in sun or light shade, in a deep, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil that stays moist; it also suits damp spots near ponds and streams. It does not like drying out. The tree is very hardy, but its flowers appear early, so a position sheltered from cold winds and late frosts gives the best crops.

Pruning and care

Plant in February-March or from September to November, and choose the spot for good, as the taproot resents being moved. For a reliable crop, plant at least two trees close together for cross-pollination by flies and beetles. Prune lightly in January and February to keep the tree at a height of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 m; an open-centre shape makes picking easier.

Use in the garden

Grown mainly for its fruit, which is picked from late August to October when soft to the touch and eaten fresh or in ice cream, sorbets and desserts; the seeds are not edible and the fruit disagrees with some people. Also an attractive specimen for orchards, exotic gardens and damp woodland edges.
