Allium senescens 'Millenium'
Informazioni su questa pianta
Allium
Ornamental onions (Allium) form a large genus of bulbous and rhizomatous perennials, native mainly to the dry and mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. Their leafless stems carry round or loose umbels of small star-shaped flowers in white, pink, purple, blue or yellow from spring into summer, and the dried seed heads stay decorative for months.
Allium senescens
Allium senescens, also called mountain garlic, is a low, clump-forming species from Europe and temperate Asia. Its flat, grey-green, slightly twisted leaves form a grassy tuft, above which small round umbels of pale pink to lilac flowers appear over a long period in summer. It spreads slowly by short rhizomes.
Esposizione e terreno
Best in full sun, but light shade is accepted. Grows in almost any well-drained soil, ideally moist in spring and drier in summer, and tolerates drought once established. Very hardy; in cold winters the foliage dies back and reappears in spring.
Potatura e cura
Low maintenance. Removing spent flowers before the seed ripens limits self-seeding and strengthens the next flowering. Cut back the foliage once it has withered. Large clumps can be lifted and divided in spring or autumn. Generally free of serious pests and diseases.
Utilizzo in giardino
Ideal as an edging along paths and borders, in rock and gravel gardens, on green roofs, in naturalistic plantings and in pots. Combines well with ornamental grasses and sun-loving perennials. The flowers attract pollinators and last well when cut, fresh or dried; the leaves smell of onion when crushed.
