Informazioni su questa pianta

Aster

Asters (Aster) are mostly perennial plants from North America, with a few species from Europe and Asia. Their many daisy-like, star-shaped flowers in blue, mauve, pink and white light up the garden mainly in autumn. Many North American asters have recently been moved to Symphyotrichum and Eurybia, but are still sold under the familiar name.

Esposizione e terreno

Asters grow in sun or partial shade in a light, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. They are fully hardy in Belgium. Good air circulation around the plants helps to limit powdery mildew, to which several kinds are prone.

Potatura e cura

Asters are easy and need little care. Pinch back the stems by about half in June for a more compact, bushy plant with more flowers. Stake tall kinds, water at the base rather than over the leaves, and add compost each spring. Cut dead stems to the ground in early winter or at the end of winter, and divide clumps about every four years.

Utilizzo in giardino

Indispensable for late-season colour in borders, cottage gardens and naturalistic plantings, where they combine well with ornamental grasses and other autumn perennials. Low kinds suit edges and containers, tall ones the middle or back of the border.
