Ampelopsis glandulosa maximowiczii

Ampelopsis glandulosa maximowiczii is a beautiful climbing plant, especially when allowed to ramble up an old tree / shrub or up trellis. In a moist, fertile soil amidst of a sunny area, it can easily grow up to 5 m.
It is a rare, deciduous climber with inconspicuous summer flowers but distinctive large, purple / blue fruit in autumn and beautiful dark green, lobed leaves. The masses of colourful fruit are really eye-catching, but not edible.

Om denne planten

Ampelopsis

Ampelopsis is a genus of deciduous climbers from the grape family, mainly from Asia, closely related to the grapevine and the Virginia creeper. They climb with tendrils and are grown for their deeply cut foliage, autumn colour and striking clusters of berries that change colour as they ripen.

Ampelopsis glandulosa maximowiczii

This variety of the porcelain berry comes from East Asia and is still rarely seen in gardens. It is a vigorous, deciduous climber of around 4 to 5 m with bright green, lobed leaves. From late summer the clusters of small berries shift from pale green to turquoise, blue, pink and violet, often all at once.

Plassering og jord

Plant in sun or partial shade; more sun means more berries. Any well-drained soil will do, provided it does not stay wet. It is hardy in Belgium and only moderately sensitive to drought once established.

Beskjæring og stell

Guide the shoots onto a trellis, wires or a pergola, since the branched tendrils need something to wrap around. Prune in February or March to keep it within bounds; it flowers on the new shoots, so this does not reduce the fruit display. Beyond that it needs little attention.

Bruk i hagen

An original climber for a pergola, fence, trellis or a large tree, and less heavy than the common Virginia creeper. The colourful berries are a feature in autumn, together with the leaf colour. Birds spread the seeds, so do not plant it near natural areas, and do not eat the fruits.
