Acer rufinerve

O této rostlině

Acer

Maples (Acer) form a large genus of trees and shrubs, nearly all from the northern hemisphere and many from China. They range from small multi-stemmed trees to large shade trees. Their opposite, usually lobed leaves, colourful young growth, winged fruits and above all their fiery autumn colours make them garden classics.

Acer rufinerve

Acer rufinerve is a snakebark maple from the mountain forests of Japan. Its smooth green bark is marked with grey-white vertical stripes and diamond-shaped lenticels, a feature that lasts for many years before the trunk darkens. The three-lobed leaves turn orange, red and sometimes purple in autumn, and yellowish-green flowers in April are followed by winged fruits.

Stanoviště a půda

In the wild it grows beneath taller trees, so it prefers partial to full shade, sheltered from scorching sun and cold winds. Give it deep, loose, humus-rich soil that is acid to neutral, stays moist and drains well; avoid chalk. It is very hardy, but the leaves can scorch in hot summers.

Řez a péče

Growth is slow at first; in time it reaches roughly 8 to 10 m. Add well-rotted compost at planting and mulch the roots. Prune little: in winter, from December to February, remove only dead or crossing wood. On heavy, wet soil snakebark maples are prone to verticillium wilt, so improve drainage where needed.

Použití v zahradě

Give it a prominent spot where the bark can be enjoyed in winter, for example as a solitary tree visible from the house. Grown with several stems it shows off even more bark. It suits woodland gardens and Japanese-style plantings with ferns, grasses and bamboo.
