Azara microphylla 'Variegata'
O této rostlině
Azara
Azaras (Azara) are evergreen shrubs and small trees from the rainforests of Chile and Argentina, related to willows and poplars. They grow in a graceful, fountain-like shape with supple branches and small, glossy leaves. In spring, tiny flowers without petals, made up of tufts of yellow stamens, spread a sweet fragrance reminiscent of vanilla.
Azara microphylla
The small-leaved azara is the hardiest species of the genus. It forms a large, upright shrub with arching branches arranged like a herringbone, densely set with tiny, dark green, shiny leaves. In early spring, in our climate around March and April, small mustard-yellow pompons with a strong scent of vanilla and chocolate appear along the branches, sometimes followed by small white berries.
Stanoviště a půda
Sun to light shade in a fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. It withstands frost to roughly minus 10 °C, so in Belgium it needs a sheltered spot, such as a south- or west-facing wall or an enclosed town garden. Flowering is richest after mild winters.
Řez a péče
Mulch and water during dry spells, especially in the first year. Pruning is not needed; remove dead wood or a misplaced branch after flowering, in May or June, without cutting back into old wood. After a severe winter the shrub may lose its leaves, which return in spring.
Použití v zahradě
A fragrant evergreen for a sheltered corner: trained against a wall, as a light screen or as a solitary shrub near a seating area where the scent can be enjoyed. A welcome early source of nectar for bees.
