Albizia julibrissin TROPICAL DREAM (PBR)
After more than 25 years of selection, Albizia julibrissin ‘Tropical Dream’ was chosen as the best-flowering and perfectly winter-hardy Albizia. It originates from a group of seedlings grown from seeds harvested from trees at higher elevations around Seoul (South Korea).
When this silk tree (its fern-like leaves close at night) is planted in a sunny and well-drained location, it survives without any winter protection at temperatures down to -20°C. Trials have also shown that this eye-catcher already flowers as a 2-year-old plant. It comes into leaf very late, around mid-May.
Every year, ‘Tropical Dream’ blooms profusely with pink flowers in terminal panicles. On warm summer evenings, they release a pleasant sweet fragrance. Flowering begins in early July, with new flowers opening daily, often until the end of September.
Albizia julibrissin ‘Tropical Dream’ is the longest-flowering and perfectly winter-hardy small tree, also suitable for colder climates.
