The Betula nana shares some characteristics with Downy and Silver Birch. It needs good light and prefers poor soils.This mountain birch is very slow growing and rarely gains height above about 1m. The bark is non-peeling and shiny red-copper colored. The leaves are rounded, 6?20 mm diameter, with a bluntly toothed margin.
