About this plant

What makes this plant special

'Summer Red' keeps producing purple-red young growth throughout summer, so fresh red shoots stand out against the dark green older leaves. In autumn it colours mainly yellow with red, unusual for a red maple. Fairly vigorous and pyramidal to oval, it reaches about 9 m in ten years and tolerates urban pollution.

Maple Acer

Maples (Acer) form a large genus of trees and shrubs, nearly all from the northern hemisphere and many from China. They range from small multi-stemmed trees to large shade trees. Their opposite, usually lobed leaves, colourful young growth, winged fruits and above all their fiery autumn colours make them garden classics.

Acer rubrum

The red maple (Acer rubrum) comes from eastern North America and in our climate grows into a medium-sized tree of around 15 m with a dense, conical to rounded crown. Small red, scented flowers appear in March before the leaves, and the three- to five-lobed leaves on red stalks turn a brilliant scarlet in autumn.

Location and soil

Plant in full sun or partial shade in deep, moist soil, preferably acid and loamy to clay; it even tolerates wet ground. On chalky soil growth stalls and the autumn colour fails to develop. It is very hardy and copes well with urban conditions, but does not like exposure to strong or salt-laden wind.

Pruning and care

Water young trees during dry spells until they are well established. Pruning is not needed; at most remove dead wood, and raise the crown only where space requires it. Note that the leaves are highly toxic to horses, so do not plant it next to paddocks.

Use in the garden

An excellent shade tree to plant on its own in a park or a medium to large garden, where its autumn colour can be seen from afar. It also works in avenues, in damp spots near water and in informal hedges. The early flowers are a valuable source of nectar for bees.
