About this plant
What makes this plant special
'Golden Treasure' is a golden-leaved form of the dwarf birch that builds a compact, rounded shrub of about 90 cm in all directions. Its tiny leaves, barely 1 cm long, open acid green in spring and turn golden yellow from summer into autumn, a bright accent for rock gardens, patios and containers.
Silver Birch Betula
Birches (Betula) are deciduous trees and shrubs from the cool and temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic to the mountains of Asia and North America. They are pioneer trees with a light, airy crown and fine twigs that carry catkins from autumn until spring. Gardeners value them above all for their peeling bark in white, cream, pink, copper or brown, and for their yellow autumn colour.
Dwarf birch Betula nana
The dwarf birch (Betula nana) is a low, spreading shrub from the peat bogs and poor, acid heaths of northern Europe, Asia and North America. It grows slowly and usually stays well under a metre tall. The small, rounded, finely toothed leaves are glossy green and turn yellow, orange or red in autumn.
Location and soil
Sun or partial shade, in a fresh, humus-rich, preferably acid soil; it also copes with poor, shallow or clay ground, provided it is not too chalky and does not dry out. It is extremely hardy and withstands severe frost without protection.
Pruning and care
Low-maintenance: water regularly in containers and during prolonged drought. Pruning is optional, but a light trim in November helps to keep the plant dense and compact.
Use in the garden
Thanks to its small size, the dwarf birch suits small town gardens, rock gardens, heather gardens and pots on terraces and balconies. It combines well with dwarf conifers, ornamental grasses and spring bulbs.
