About this plant

What makes this plant special

Blue Moon® grows into a regular, compact ball of about 80 cm that keeps its shape without pruning, adding only 2 to 3 cm a year. The slender, slightly drooping shoots are clothed in very soft, intense silver-blue foliage, which turns more blue-green in shade, so give it a bright spot.

False cypress Chamaecyparis

False cypresses (Chamaecyparis) are evergreen conifers from the cool, moist forests of North America and East Asia, belonging to the cypress family. They carry flattened sprays of small, aromatic scale leaves and tiny round cones. Countless garden forms exist, from dwarf buns to tall columns, in green, blue, grey and golden tones.

Sawara cypress Chamaecyparis pisifera

Sawara cypress comes from Japan. The wild tree is large, but in gardens it is grown almost only in its many cultivars, with thread-like, feathery or soft juvenile foliage in green, blue-grey or gold, often whitish underneath, and reddish-brown bark peeling in strips.

Location and soil

Sun or partial shade in a spot sheltered from prevailing winds. Prefers fertile, cool, light and above all well-drained soil, neutral to slightly acidic. Avoid wet, poorly drained ground. Hardiness varies between forms, but most come through normal Belgian winters well.

Pruning and care

No pruning is needed. On young hedge plants the soft new growth can be clipped regularly, but never cut into old wood, as bare patches will not fill in again. Feed with a conifer fertiliser in April and water generously during the first years.

Use in the garden

Dwarf and slow-growing forms suit rock gardens, borders and containers, and their fine, often weeping foliage adds texture to conifer and heather gardens. Young plants can also be trained into a low hedge.
