About this plant
Deutzia
Deutzias (Deutzia) are deciduous shrubs from East Asia, where around sixty species grow in thickets and open woodland up to the Himalaya. They form upright bushes whose slender stems arch with age, and in late spring and early summer they disappear under clusters of small white or pink, star- or bell-shaped flowers.
Slender deutzia Deutzia gracilis
Slender deutzia (Deutzia gracilis) comes from Japan and forms a dense, bushy shrub of about one metre with thin, spreading stems that arch over time. In May and June it is covered in small, pure white star-shaped flowers held in upright clusters above narrow, finely toothed leaves.
Location and soil
It likes a cool, deep soil in sun or partial shade and is undemanding about soil type. Very hardy and fast-growing.
Pruning and care
Water during dry spells in the first years. Prune in July, just after flowering, by cutting the flowered shoots back by about a third; an occasional thinning of old wood keeps the bush young.
Use in the garden
A versatile small shrub for low hedges, borders, rock gardens and the front of shrub plantings, and well suited to growing in a container on a terrace.
