About this plant
What makes this plant special
This NOBLE® selection is even more compact and floriferous than the wild form and stays below 1 m. As long as the soil stays moist it keeps producing lightly scented white stars that attract bees and other pollinators, and its dark, blue-tinged leaves turn red-violet in autumn. Tolerant of part shade, it brightens darker corners and grows well in a large pot.
Deutzia
Deutzias (Deutzia) are deciduous shrubs from East Asia, where around sixty species grow in thickets and open woodland up to the Himalaya. They form upright bushes whose slender stems arch with age, and in late spring and early summer they disappear under clusters of small white or pink, star- or bell-shaped flowers.
Deutzia setchuenensis corymbiflora
Deutzia setchuenensis var. corymbiflora, from Sichuan in China, is a compact, rather upright shrub of around one metre. It stands apart for its exceptionally long flowering: from June to October, sometimes with a short pause in midsummer, it keeps producing airy, rounded clusters of small white stars above grey-green leaves that often colour in autumn.
Location and soil
Easy in ordinary garden soil that stays moist, in partial shade or sun. Hardy in Belgian winters.
Pruning and care
Keep the soil moist, especially in pots. A light trim in July or August, removing faded flower clusters and any untidy shoots, is enough to keep the bush compact.
Use in the garden
Its modest size and long season make it a good choice for containers, small gardens and for brightening a somewhat shady corner.
