About this plant

Escallonia

Escallonia is a genus of around sixty mostly evergreen shrubs and small trees from South America, chiefly Chile and the Andes, where they grow in scrub and on windswept coasts. They are loved for their dense, glossy, slightly aromatic foliage and for clusters of small bell-shaped flowers in white, pink or red that appear all summer.

Location and soil

Escallonias like full sun, in warm areas also light shade, and shelter from cold, drying winds. They prefer a fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil and dislike heavy lime. They tolerate salt spray, but are only moderately hardy and can be damaged in harsh winters.

Pruning and care

Plant preferably in spring. Prune once or twice a year: at the end of winter, in February-March, and lightly again in September after flowering; young plants can be cut back by a third to make them bushier. Mulch the base and water regularly during the first summers.

Use in the garden

Escallonias make excellent evergreen flowering hedges, clipped or informal, and are a classic choice for coastal gardens. They also work well in shrub borders, as windbreaks in mild areas and in large containers on a terrace.
