About this plant

What makes this plant special

'Spider's Web' is a horticultural mutation of Japanese aralia whose glossy dark green leaves are dotted and splashed with cream, a pattern recalling fine cobwebs that lights up shady corners. It reaches about 2 m in the ground and 1.5 m in a pot, and a spot out of cold, dry winter winds protects the foliage.

Fatsia

Fatsias (Fatsia) are a small genus of evergreen shrubs from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, related to ivy. Grown for their large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves on long stalks, they give a lush, tropical look. Ivy-like umbels of small creamy flowers appear late in the season, followed by black berries.

Fatsia japonica

Japanese aralia is the best-known species of the genus, native to southern Japan and Korea. Its glossy dark green leaves are palmately divided into usually seven to nine lobes and can exceed 30 cm across. White flower balls appear in autumn, followed by shiny black berries; it forms a rounded shrub of 1.5 to 3 m.

Location and soil

Partial shade to shade, against a wall or in a sheltered bed out of cold wind and midday sun. Moist, rich, light and slightly acid soil; it dislikes waterlogging. Withstands moderate frost, but snow and winter wind can damage the leaves.

Pruning and care

Pruning is not needed; cut back straggly shoots in spring (March to May) if desired. Removing the fruit clusters in autumn encourages larger leaves. Water generously in dry spells and protect young plants in harsh winters.

Use in the garden

A strong architectural shrub for shady borders, woodland edges, courtyards and large containers, or as an informal screen. Also a popular houseplant for bright, cool rooms without direct sun.
