About this plant

What makes this plant special

'Rozanne' grew from a chance seedling noticed in 1989 in a Somerset garden and later received the RHS Award of Garden Merit and the title Plant of the Centenary at Chelsea in 2013. Its flowers, about 5 cm across with a white eye, keep coming for months, and faded blooms drop cleanly without deadheading.

Geranium

Cranesbills (Geranium) are hardy perennials from the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North America. They form dense clumps or spreading mats of lobed, often finely cut leaves and bear saucer-shaped flowers in white, pink, blue or purple over a long period. Their easy nature and their ability to keep weeds down make them garden favourites.

Location and soil

Most cranesbills grow in sun or partial shade, and several cope with dry shade under trees. They are not fussy about soil but do best in a fairly light, humus-rich, well-drained soil that stays moist in summer. Avoid waterlogged ground. Most species are very hardy.

Pruning and care

Once established, cranesbills need little attention and rarely need feeding in open ground. Cutting the plants back hard in July or August, after the first flush, removes spent stems and tired leaves and brings fresh growth and often a second flowering. Old clumps can be divided in spring. Protect young shoots against slugs.

Use in the garden

Cranesbills are versatile plants for borders, ground cover, path edges, rock gardens and containers. They combine well with roses, shrubs and other perennials and keep the soil covered. The tender balcony 'geranium' belongs to a different genus, Pelargonium.
