About this plant
Halesia
Silverbells (Halesia) are deciduous large shrubs and small trees from the moist woodlands of the south-eastern United States, with one species in China. In spring, just before or with the new leaves, the branches are hung with countless white, drooping bells reminiscent of snowdrops. Winged fruits follow and stay on the bare branches into winter, and the foliage turns yellow in autumn.
Carolina silverbell Halesia carolina
The Carolina silverbell (Halesia carolina) usually grows as a broad, multi-stemmed large shrub that can become a small tree of around 6 to 8 m, often as wide as it is tall. Its white bells, about 1.5 to 2 cm long, open in great numbers along the branches in spring and are followed by four-winged fruits that ripen brown.
Location and soil
Plant in sun or partial shade, sheltered from wind, in a light, rich, moist soil that is lime-free and preferably acid. It is fully hardy in Belgium and has a moderate tolerance of drought; in a warm spell, young plants appreciate a spray of water over the leaves.
Pruning and care
This species needs no regular pruning. Simply remove dead or diseased wood when you see it. Water young plants during dry periods and mulch to keep the roots cool and moist in summer.
Use in the garden
Grow it as a specimen in a lawn or as a multi-stemmed focal point in a larger garden. It combines well with rhododendrons, camellias, pieris, styrax and witch hazels, which need the same lime-free soil.
