About this plant
What makes this plant special
PINK ANNABELLE (Invincibelle®) was the first smooth hydrangea with pink flowers. Its rounded heads, up to 30 cm across, open deep pink and soften to paler shades as they age, appearing in repeated flushes from early summer until the frosts. A densely branched, robust shrub, very hardy and about 1 to 1.2 m tall.
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas are shrubs and climbers from East Asia and the Americas, grown for their large flower heads in which showy sterile florets ring or hide the small fertile flowers. Many grow wild along woodland edges, in filtered light and in acid, humus-rich soil that holds moisture yet drains freely; a pH between about 4.5 and 7 suits them best. They flower for weeks in summer.
Smooth hydrangea Hydrangea arborescens
The smooth hydrangea is a bushy shrub from the woodlands of eastern North America, growing to around 1.5 m. From June to September it bears large rounded heads of small white flowers, pale green at first. Because it flowers on new wood, it blooms reliably every year, even after a hard winter.
Location and soil
Grows in full sun to deep shade: in sun it needs extra water during hot spells, and in full shade it flowers somewhat less. It does best in moist, humus-rich soil but copes with most soil types, chalky ones included. Exceptionally hardy. Like the wild form, most selections slowly spread into a small colony.
Pruning and care
Flowers on the current year's wood, so it blooms every year. Prune in March, before growth starts; the harder the cut, the larger the heads. Heavy heads can make 'Annabelle' collapse after prolonged rain, so do not prune it too low; newer selections have sturdier stems. Pruning is optional: you can also simply remove the old flower heads in spring.
Use in the garden
A reliable shrub for borders, groups, banks and woodland edges, and also as a specimen. The flower heads stay attractive as they fade and are excellent for cutting and for dried arrangements.
