About this plant

What makes this plant special

Tickled Pink® is a compact, well-branched panicle hydrangea of about 1.5 m, selected by Michael Dirr as an improvement on 'Pink Diamond'. Its large plumes, 20 to 25 cm long, are densely packed with recurved sterile florets that give them a full, frilly look; they open white from late June and turn rosy pink from August.

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are shrubs and climbers from East Asia and the Americas, grown for their large flower heads in which showy sterile florets ring or hide the small fertile flowers. Many grow wild along woodland edges, in filtered light and in acid, humus-rich soil that holds moisture yet drains freely; a pH between about 4.5 and 7 suits them best. They flower for weeks in summer.

Panicled hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata

Panicle hydrangeas are among the most rewarding flowering shrubs for the garden. They form large, conical plumes that colour the late summer for weeks, are exceptionally hardy and very easy to maintain.

Location and soil

Panicle hydrangeas are true sun lovers: grow them in full sun, in humus-rich soil that stays moist in summer but is drier in winter; where winters are wet, a gentle slope helps. They cope better with heat and drought than other hydrangeas and are very hardy. In too much shade the stems become long and lax.

Pruning and care

Flowers on the current year's wood, so a hard cut in March costs no flowers; the harder the cut, the larger the plumes, and knee height (about 30 cm) suits small and medium varieties. Left unpruned for years, plants tend to fall open. A single strong stem can also be trained into a small tree. Keep mulch away from the stem base.

Use in the garden

Beautiful as a specimen, in groups in the border or as a flowering hedge; the compact selections also do very well in pots on a terrace or balcony. The plumes are also popular as dried flowers.
