Acer negundo 'Flamingo'

Acer negundo 'Flamingo' is a medium sized shrub or small tree, the plant is also known under the name of Californian Feather Maple. Like many other Acer he is by his dimensions suitable for smaller gardens and very popular with bonsai enthusiasts when it is pruned enough. It grows quite fast and has a rounded crown, variegated, with odd-pinnate leaves silver white with pink edge in autumn yellow, discolored brown. It does well in all soil types, but it's recommended to plant it in a ground that is slightly acidic for the best possible growth. Plant it in a nice sunny pot or at a location with partial shade also. Hardy, but shelter from wind is recommended. Is also resistant to atmospheric pollution.

Informazioni su questa pianta

Acer

Maples (Acer) form a large genus of trees and shrubs, nearly all from the northern hemisphere and many from China. They range from small multi-stemmed trees to large shade trees. Their opposite, usually lobed leaves, colourful young growth, winged fruits and above all their fiery autumn colours make them garden classics.

Acer negundo

The ash-leaved maple or box elder is a North American species that stands out among maples for its pinnate leaves with three to seven leaflets, reminiscent of ash. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees. It is a fast-growing tree with a broad, spreading crown, reaching around 15 m; the garden forms often have variegated foliage.

Esposizione e terreno

Undemanding: grows in moist as well as fairly dry soils and tolerates poor ground. Sun is best; light partial shade is accepted, but deep shade is not. Very hardy. The wood is brittle, so choose a spot sheltered from strong winds.

Potatura e cura

Fast and easy to grow. Prune every few years in winter (December to February) to balance the crown and remove weak or broken branches. Remove suckers from the base, and watch for seedlings near female trees, which can fruit abundantly. Can be affected by powdery mildew.

Utilizzo in giardino

Useful for quick screening, as an intermediate layer below taller trees or as a light shade tree. The variegated selections bring colour to borders and can be kept compact by pruning. Avoid planting right next to buildings or parking spaces because of possible branch breakage.
