Akebia quinata

Akebia quinata or akébie, is a charming climber: his unusual blooms, leaves and easy care are good reasons to give him a place in your garden. The stems of this vigorous vine reacht between 6 and 10 meters long. Its flowers are notable for their voilet-purple petals and their intense vanilla flavor. In mild weather, the vine gives cucumber-shaped fruit.

Informazioni su questa pianta

Akebia

Chocolate vines (Akebia) are vigorous twining climbers from the temperate forests of China, Korea and Japan; the genus counts only a handful of species. They are grown for their elegant palmate foliage and their unusual, fragrant spring flowers in hanging clusters, which after a warm summer can be followed by sausage-shaped edible fruits.

Akebia quinata

Akebia quinata, the five-leaf akebia, is the most widely grown species of the genus. Each leaf has five rounded leaflets and is deciduous or semi-evergreen depending on the winter. In April and May drooping clusters of chocolate-purple flowers appear, with a sweet scent reminiscent of cocoa and vanilla. Its stems can reach some 6 to 12 m.

Esposizione e terreno

It grows in most garden soils but prefers a light, moist, well-drained loam. It flowers best in sun or partial shade yet tolerates fairly deep shade, making it suitable for east- or north-facing walls. It is very hardy, and the foliage may take on a purple tinge in cold weather.

Potatura e cura

Trim lightly after flowering, in May or June, to control its size and remove spindly growth. Stems that touch the ground can root, so cut these off. In mild areas, remove fruits before they ripen if you want to prevent self-seeding, as the species can become invasive in some climates.

Utilizzo in giardino

Use it to cover pergolas, open fences, trellises or old trunks, or as ground cover in natural and woodland-style gardens. It pairs well with other climbers such as clematis or climbing roses, with shade-tolerant ground covers at its feet. For edible fruit, plant two genetically different specimens, not cuttings from the same plant.
