Informazioni su questa pianta
Andromeda
Bog rosemary (Andromeda) is a small genus of the heather family, represented in gardens by a dwarf evergreen shrub from the peat bogs and moorland of the cool northern hemisphere. It is valued for its narrow, blue-green leaves that recall rosemary and for its clusters of small, nodding pink-white bells in spring.
Andromeda polifolia
Andromeda polifolia forms a low, spreading cushion of slender, upright stems with leathery, pointed leaves of 1 to 3 cm, glaucous blue-green in colour. From April to June it carries many small bell-shaped flowers in white to soft pink, hanging from arching stalks at the tips of the shoots. It grows slowly and usually stays below about 40 cm.
Esposizione e terreno
Plant in light, well-drained yet constantly moist, acid soil in full sun or partial shade, out of the burning midday sun. Coming from boggy, upland habitats, it withstands severe frost; heat and dry soil are its real enemies. The best planting months are March and September.
Potatura e cura
Water during dry periods and mulch with acid material to keep the roots cool. No regular pruning is needed; if desired, shorten untidy shoots lightly in June or July, just after flowering. The plant is fairly resistant to diseases.
Utilizzo in giardino
Works well as a low groundcover on acid soil, in rock gardens, heather gardens and along the edges of ponds or bog gardens. Its evergreen, bluish foliage stays attractive all year round, also in pots on a terrace or balcony.
