Acer pensylvanicum
O této rostlině
Acer
Maples (Acer) form a large genus of trees and shrubs, nearly all from the northern hemisphere and many from China. They range from small multi-stemmed trees to large shade trees. Their opposite, usually lobed leaves, colourful young growth, winged fruits and above all their fiery autumn colours make them garden classics.
Acer pensylvanicum
The striped or snakebark maple is native to the forests of eastern North America. Its green bark is marked with vertical white stripes, a striking feature in winter that gradually turns reddish brown on older wood. The large three-lobed leaves turn bright yellow in autumn. It grows into a large shrub or small, often multi-stemmed tree.
Stanoviště a půda
A woodland plant for partial to full shade; strong sun scorches the leaves. Needs humus-rich, consistently moist but well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic, and does not tolerate paving over its roots. Hardy, and at its best where summers are cool.
Řez a péče
Low maintenance. Pruning is rarely needed; remove dead or crossing branches in winter (December to February). A layer of mulch keeps the soil moist, which matters most in dry summers. Possible problems include leaf spot and verticillium wilt.
Použití v zahradě
Best in a woodland garden, a shaded border or a naturalistic corner, where the striped bark stands out in winter. Also suited to small and patio gardens and to large containers. The flowers attract bees in spring.
