Amelanchier
Serviceberries (Amelanchier) are deciduous shrubs and small trees, mostly from North America, with a few species from Europe and Asia. They are among the first shrubs to flower in spring, bear small edible berries in early summer and finish the year with warm orange and red autumn foliage. Many grow naturally as multi-stemmed specimens.
Amelanchier arborea
The downy serviceberry is native to eastern North America, where it grows on rocky slopes and in open woodland. It becomes a large shrub or small tree, in gardens usually around 5 to 8 m. The slightly fragrant white flowers hang in loose clusters and open before the leaves, followed by dark purple berries in early summer.
Stanoviště a půda
Grows in full sun to partial shade in average, well-drained soil and tolerates a fairly wide range of soils, including clay, as well as urban conditions. It is very hardy. Flowering and autumn colour are at their best in a sunny spot.
Řez a péče
Low maintenance. The plant readily forms root suckers: remove them in early spring if you want a tree form, or leave them for a bushier shrub. Any thinning is done in May or June, after flowering. Problems are rare.
Použití v zahradě
Suits shrub borders, woodland and natural gardens, and banks of ponds or streams. A dark backdrop shows off the flowers and autumn colour particularly well. The berries can be used in jam, jelly and pies and attract birds.
