Amelanchier canadensis Rainbow Pillar®
The Amelanchier canadensis 'Rainbow Pillar' has clusters of pretty white flowers that adorn the branches in spring. It has green leaves that turns into brilliant red, orange and yellow colours in autumn before falling. It gives the three plenty of colours an it looks like a 'rainbow', hence its name. A beautiful standalone tree that is ideal for smaller gardens.

Serviceberries (Amelanchier) are deciduous shrubs and small trees, mostly from North America, with a few species from Europe and Asia. They are among the first shrubs to flower in spring, bear small edible berries in early summer and finish the year with warm orange and red autumn foliage. Many grow naturally as multi-stemmed specimens.
Amelanchier canadensis
The Canadian serviceberry comes from eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. It forms an upright, later vase-shaped shrub, often with several stems, reaching around 6 m. Pure white star-shaped flowers appear in April and May, followed by small berries that turn from red to black, and the leaves colour orange to purple in autumn.

Thrives in sun or partial shade, in a bright spot that is not scorching. It accepts a wide range of soils, including fairly moist ones, as long as they do not dry out. Very hardy and seldom troubled by pests.

Little pruning is required. If needed, thin out the crown in May or June after flowering, and remove suckers in early spring to keep a clear framework of stems. Water regularly during the first summers.

Its upright habit makes it a good solitary shrub for small gardens, a component of mixed informal hedges or a plant for a large container on the terrace while young. The sweet berries are eaten raw or in jam and pastries and are much loved by birds.
