About this plant

Yellozzood Cladrastis

Yellowwoods (Cladrastis) are deciduous trees from eastern Asia and the south-east of North America, belonging to the pea family. Their name refers to the yellow colour of freshly cut wood. They are grown for their large pinnate leaves, their hanging panicles of fragrant, pea-like flowers in early summer and their yellow autumn colour.

Kentucky yellowwood Cladrastis kentukea

The American yellowwood comes from the south-east of the United States. It grows into a low-branched tree or multi-stemmed shrub with a broad, rounded crown, around 8 to 15 m tall. Its leaves of 7 to 9 leaflets appear late and turn golden yellow in autumn; in May and June it carries scented white panicles of about 25 cm, followed by flat pods.

Location and soil

Plant in full sun, sheltered from strong wind, in a fertile, deep and well-drained soil; slightly acidic to slightly chalky soils are fine. Once established it copes with short dry spells, and it is very hardy in Belgium.

Pruning and care

Water during the first two summers after planting. The tree needs no regular pruning; to keep a single trunk, remove competing stems in July, as earlier cuts bleed. Be patient: young trees can take years to flower, and heavy bloom often comes only every second year.

Use in the garden

A fine specimen tree for lawns, small parks and larger gardens, offering light summer shade, fragrant blossom and bright autumn colour. Grown as a multi-stemmed shrub it also makes a lush backdrop in large borders.
