Informazioni su questa pianta

Aronia

Chokeberries (Aronia) are deciduous shrubs from eastern North America and members of the rose family. They are prized for their white spring blossom, abundant red or black berries rich in antioxidants and a fiery red autumn colour. Their exceptional hardiness and tolerance of poor soil make them very easy shrubs.

Aronia arbutifolia

The red chokeberry forms an upright, vase-shaped, suckering shrub of around 2 to 3 m. Its narrow, glossy dark green leaves, greyish underneath, recall those of the strawberry tree. White to pale pink flowers open in April and May, followed by bright red berries that hang on well into winter. In autumn the foliage turns a brilliant scarlet.

Esposizione e terreno

Thrives in sun or partial shade in a light, moist, humus-rich soil, but also tolerates clay and wet ground. Full sun gives the best fruiting and the strongest autumn colour; in shade or chalky soil the colours are duller. Very hardy.

Potatura e cura

Prune at the end of winter (February to March) if needed, shortening long shoots and removing some old stems at the base to rejuvenate the shrub. Remove root suckers to stop it from forming colonies. Water young plants during dry periods.

Utilizzo in giardino

Excellent as a solitary shrub, in informal hedges, wildlife plantings, rain gardens and damp corners, where the red berries brighten the winter. The fruits are edible in jam but less tasty than those of black-fruited types. In parts of south-west France it has escaped from gardens and is considered invasive, so avoid planting it next to natural heath or woodland.
