African lilies (Agapanthus) are clump-forming perennials from southern Africa that grow from fleshy rhizomes. Above a tuft of strap-shaped leaves, sturdy leafless stems carry rounded umbels of trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of blue, violet or white in summer. Gardeners value them for their graphic, long-lasting display and easy culture.
Agapanthus africanus
Agapanthus africanus is an evergreen species from the Cape region of South Africa. It forms a dense mound of narrow, glossy leaves above which rounded heads of intense blue flowers appear on stiff stems in mid to late summer. White-flowered forms also exist.
Stanowisko i gleba
This species needs full sun, warmth and shelter, in a light, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic tendency. It is only half-hardy and suffers once temperatures drop to around -6 to -8 °C, so in Belgium it is best grown in a pot that can be moved under cover in winter.

Remove faded flower stems at the base. In pots, keep the compost moist during the growing season and feed moderately; plants flower most freely when their roots fill the container. Before the first frosts, move pots to a bright, frost-free place and water only sparingly until spring.
Zastosowanie w ogrodzie
An elegant choice for terraces, patios and large containers, and for borders in mild coastal areas. It combines well with other blue, white or mauve perennials and with exotic-looking plants. The flower heads are suitable for cutting.
